Frumpy Middle-aged Mom: Why I was terrified by the Instant Pot device in my kitchen – Pasadena Star News
I don’t know if you’ve ever been terrified by your own kitchen appliances, but I confess I have, more than once.
Most recently this occurred after I bought an electric device called the “Instant Pot,” which supposedly is the best-selling item ever on Amazon.com. It’s also one of the most frightening. And this is a true cautionary tale.
A couple of years ago, the kids and I spent Thanksgiving Day at the Banana Azul resort in Costa Rica. American Thanksgiving isn’t a big deal in Costa Rica. Surprise, surprise. I’d already given up on my very minimal effort to find a festive turkey dinner in the little town of Puerto Viejo where we were staying, and sent my teenagers off with strangers to go rappelling and possibly kill themselves climbing down a jungle waterfall somewhere. If you’ve ever had teenagers, this makes perfect sense to you. Meanwhile, I spent the day lying by the pool, doing what millions of other Americans do: I shopped on my phone.
Since the resort had Wi-Fi, I was able to lie by the pool in my swimsuit in Central America and shop all the early Black Friday deals occurring 1.2 zillion miles away in another country. I love technology. Except when I don’t. Then, I noticed this “Instant Pot” thing that all my friends were talking about was on sale at deep discount for only $79. And I really don’t have enough kitchen appliances cluttering up my counter. So I bought it with one click.
